Staff Accountant

Position Overview

The client is looking for a detail-oriented and reliable Staff Accountant to support the accounting team with the day-to-day financial operations of a growing construction company. This role sits at the intersection of job costing, payroll, billing, and general accounting support — and requires someone who is organized, accurate, and comfortable learning construction-specific accounting systems and workflows.

You will work closely with two senior accountants and assist them across their daily responsibilities, which span project cost tracking, weekly payroll processing, customer invoicing, and back-end accounting support. The right candidate is someone who takes ownership of their tasks, picks up systems quickly, and delivers consistent, accurate work day after day.

Key Responsibilities

Payroll Processing — Weekly

• Assist with processing weekly payroll for the employees using Paycom
• Verify timekeeping records, hours worked, and payroll data inputs for accuracy before each payroll run
• Support payroll adjustments, corrections, and employee record updates within Paycom as directed
• Maintain organized payroll documentation and records for compliance and reporting purposes

Job Cost Entry & Tracking

• Enter and maintain job cost data in Foundation, the company's construction accounting software
• Process accounts payable invoices related to specific jobs, ensuring all costs are coded to the correct project
• Enter equipment time and usage allocations to the appropriate job cost codes
• Track materials used on projects and ensure accurate cost entry into the system
• Maintain organized job cost records that support accurate project profitability reporting

Job Setup in Foundation

• Set up new jobs in Foundation as projects are awarded and initiated
• Ensure all job setup information is accurate and complete including project details, cost codes, and billing structure
• Coordinate with the accounting team to ensure new job records are ready before costs begin to be incurred

Customer Invoicing

• Generate customer invoices based on completed work, contract terms, and project milestones
• Review invoices for accuracy before distribution and ensure they reflect the correct job, scope, and amounts
• Maintain an organized record of invoices issued, payment status, and outstanding balances
• Coordinate with the accounting team on billing questions, adjustments, or disputes as they arise

Accounting Team Support

• Assist two senior accountants with their day-to-day accounting responsibilities as needed
• Support month-end close activities including reconciliations, accruals, and data review under guidance
• Handle general accounting tasks such as data entry, document organization, and record maintenance
• Take on additional accounting and administrative support tasks as the team's needs evolve

Required Qualifications

• Experience in accounting, bookkeeping, or a closely related role — construction accounting experience is a strong plus
• Familiarity with job costing concepts — understanding how costs flow to specific projects is essential for this role
• Experience with payroll processing or payroll software — Paycom experience is a plus
• Strong attention to detail and accuracy — cost entries, payroll, and invoices must be right the first time
• Organized and reliable with the ability to manage recurring weekly and monthly responsibilities consistently
• Proficient in Microsoft Excel or Google Sheets for tracking and reporting support
• Self-directed and comfortable working remotely while staying closely coordinated with the team

Preferred Qualifications

• Prior experience in construction, asphalt, paving, or a related trades industry
• Hands-on experience with Foundation construction accounting software
• Experience with Paycom for payroll processing
• Familiarity with accounts payable workflows in a project-based or job cost environment
• Associate degree or Bachelor's degree in Accounting, Finance, or a related field
